Arcadia Redesigned

Weekend workshop with Herman van den Boom and Anne Kotzan

Herman van den Boom, Crisnee

Landscape photography is one of the main themes in photography . How to photograph a landscape, how do I find my motive, how can I express my views and feelings regarding a landscape in photographic images. These questions and issues are practically and theoretically handled by Herman van den Boom and Anne Kotzan.

In the workshop Herman van den Boom will show how one can react with the camera at certain landscape situations and how one's own principles can be translated into compelling personal imagery. Anne Kotzan will talk in her lecture on the history of travel photography about aspects one can use and apply within one's own photography.

The goal is to develop a new fresh look on how to photograph (urban) landscapes and this based on one's own personal development. The workshop is suitable for beginners, advanced students and professionals. It teaches how one can be inspired and how to convert one's own ideas into personal original images.

The focus is on the urban landscape of the Meuse valley in and around Liege. Here one is confronted with the transition from idyllic Haspengouw and Roman landscapes with old farmhouses, castles and abbeys into the remnants of a once thriving mining industry. This region has inspired many photographers and cinematographers, we mention the Dardenne brothers, who with their films about the region won the Golden Palm at the Cannes Film Festival several times, and the world famous German couple Bernd and Hilla Becher.

The docents

In this tradition, Herman van den Boom is photographing for more than 10 years in the Meuse Valley. His work has been exhibited in numerous solo and groupe exhibitions, including the Museum of Photography in Charleroi and the Brussels Bozar. His photographs are regularly published in De Standaard, Het Laatste Nieuws, De Morgen, De Volkskrant and various international journals. He was professor at the Academy of Fine Arts Maastricht and Enschede and at the Higher Institute of Arts HISK Antwerp (now Ghent). He was also a finalist in the Sony World Photography Awards.
